Not impressed.

Last night called for a mid-week date and, after running into a business contact and her friend who writes for Eater, fried pickles. I mean, when a food writer says order the fried pickles, you order the fried pickles. A few cocktails with a co-worker of Ry’s and his darling girlfriend, some country music and a dash to the nearest cab for a 4 block ride in the pouring rain made for an unexpected and fun Wednesday night. And to think that all I had on the agenda was Modern Family and vegan ice cream…
There is magic in long-distance friendships. They let you relate to other human beings in a way that goes beyond being physically together and is often more profound.

My best friend lives in Atlanta and its always weird to me when I realized we haven’t seen each other since (insert date here). Living far apart has never affected how close we are and, if anything, our daily epic email chains and texting keeps pretty much in constant contact. I am so grateful for our friendship across the miles and am even MORE grateful that I am hopping on a plane for some in-person friend time this weekend. Technology doesn’t replace IRL time together and I can hardly wait to belly laugh and “remember when” in person.

The blog “Reasons My Son is Crying” just kills me. It’s right up there with Honest Toddler– belly laughing hilarious.

I love Instagram and its filters that allow me to look like I have serious photography skills. I have some of my favorite shots printed and on the fridge right now but they have tape on their corners that are lifting up and I hate crap all over the fridge almost as much as I hate crap sitting out on the counter (a toaster is not decor). Enter Stickygram, a company that turns your Instagram photos into magnets. I chose my favorite Chicago shots, uploaded them to Stickygram and less than a week later, my little magnets made their way across the pond (Stickygram is based in the UK).
And I LOVE them. They are the organized, perfectly proportional answer to my front of fridge woes. It’s fun to see the Chicago love every time I am in the kitchen, know that I took those images and the memories connected to them and have my fridge not look so cluttered. I am excited to order some as gifts- at $14.99 and free shipping, I can’t think of a better personal little presie. Well done, Stickygram.
91. Quotes Whether scribbled on a chalkboard outside of a yoga studio (like this one), printed on a card, spray painted on the side of a building, a good quote always gives me something to think about.
92. Art I love art and art museums and we are so lucky to have the Art Institute in Chicago. The Picasso exhibit that’s there right now is amazing and I cannot get enough of the Chagall windows.
93. Kale. In my salads, in my juice, in place of pasta, kale chips…I cannot get enough of kale. Nutritional. Powerhouse.
94. Spending time with my mom. I loved having her for a visit this weekend and I think we both super loved our dinner at The Pump Room.
95. Hitting the Home Goods jackpot. Often times, I go in and find nothing. But sometimes, I score. Like this table for the porch- it looks like this summer, we won’t have to balance plates/books/drinks on our laps!
96. Yoga. I’ve been practicing for almost 4 years and every time I step on my mat, I am reminded of the good it’s done for every aspect of my life.
97. A good night’s sleep. Not to be underestimated.
Oh hey, boy…
So excited for the (2 hour!) return of Don Draper and crew tonight. I have 2 more episodes of season 5 to get through on Netflix and then I will be all caught up and ready for new drama.

I am halfway through Sandberg’s Lean In and really enjoying the conversations it is sparking with my colleagues. I remember being a little girl and afraid of the “bossy” label. Being a child, I didn’t get that “bossy” was dismissive, a way to demean an idea or a vision, a way to tell me that I should probably take my big, bold ideas and sit down. Now that I’m an adult, I would be proud to have a daughter who is bossy. Rude or disrespectful? Absolutely not. But if my girl ever holds back her innate leadership qualities because she could be labeled as bossy, she will have bigger problems on her hands…namely, a Mama who will not stand for her being anything other than who she truly is.
