Citrus Coming Out of My Ears

You may remember that back in December, my dear Grandmother sent me some holiday cheer in the form of a box of oranges; 28 in all.  Ryan and I were so excited- produce in the winter up here is so yuck and having fresh, flavorful citrus was a huge treat.  We had an orange for breakfast, brought one with our lunches, cut one up for dessert at night.  We thoroughly enjoyed every last piece of that bright little Christmas gift.

Fast forward a month to the slip of paper that was under our apartment door last night notifying us that we had a perishable package to pick up downstairs.  Lo and behold…

We were sure to tell Grandma how much we loved our gift and apparently, she wanted to keep our Vitamin C levels up.  All. Winter. Long.  This box has not one but two layers of oranges- 44 of them, to be exact.

I’ve got to tell you, it’s been a stressful week in our household; lots of that technical life stuff going on.  So to get another box of so many damn oranges, well, Ryan and I had to put them down in the elevator because we were laughing so hard.  Laughing about what the heck we are going to do with 44 oranges and making up funny ways we can put them in everything we consume and even just the fact that my 93 year old Grandma who does not have internet access made another call to the orange people to request another grove be sent to Chicago.  We needed that laugh as much as our cold Chicago bodies need some Vitamin C.

And what do you know- the box says “From Sunny Florida” and it did actually send some light.  Sunny, indeed.

Ah-ha!

adminChicago, full moon, strange, Uncategorized%s Comments

People were acting strange yesterday; saw a man running outside in shorts and a t-shirt (it was 16 degrees), a random lady yelling at the Starbucks girl for not filling up her coffee to the right level, and I spent a majority of the night feeling like I forgot something major (Did I pay bills? Did I feed Luna Bell?  Did I go to work today?).

Sure enough, when I looked out my window, it made sense- there was a full, full, FULL moon.  Gorgeous moon.  A moon giving light to a sea of ice that reflected like glass.

So, I made some tea, took a deep breath and took my perch at the window, staring out at it until the full moon had passed over my building.

Note to self: whenever you feel like Crazy Town, check and see what the moon is doing.  It might not be your fault.

Trader Joe’s has the most delightful bouquets on the cheap so I can treat myself often.  I think this mix is particularly pretty!

“What I’ve found does the most good is just to get into a taxi and go to Tiffany’s.  It calms me down right away, the quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there, not with those kind men in their nice suits… If I could find a real-life place that made me feel like Tiffany’s, then I’d buy some furniture and give the cat a name.”

Dirty Little (Design) Secrets

adminChicago Architectual Foundation, Design on a Dime, Dirty Little Design Secrets, Frank Fontana, HGTV, Uncategorized%s Comments

Last night, the Chicago Architecture Foundation hosted a lecture by HGTV‘s Frank Fontana, the guy who does the  “Design on a Dime” show- you know, that show where they tackle a room or a problem area of a house, all for under $1,000.  Since the extent of my design skill being limited to whatever is at Crate and Barrel during any given season and my friend Linda is sick of looking at her white walls, we figured seeing what Frank had to say couldn’t hurt.

Highlights:

  • Re-purpose, re-vision, re-paint
  • Asking yourself “What is my design style?  What is my personal style in dress and do I want this room to reflect that….or not?”
  • the Craftsmen Experience (on Huron and Franklin-can’t wait to check it out!)
  • Have a pizza and painting party- invite great people over, eat pizza, slap some paint on a wall, make a night of it! (This is happening, Linda!)
  • Check out hotel furniture resellers for amazing pieces at cheap prices.  In Chicago, we have Cooper Hotel Furniture on Halsted and Fork Pit, out by Midway.
  • There’s a guy named Saul at the Fabric Outlet on 21st and Ashland- I guess this man is the go-to guy for amazing fabric imported from all over the world at rock bottom prices.

Frank said that laziness is the biggest holdback from home design.  Considering that I still haven’t put together the 4th chair of my dining room table and I’ve lived in this apartment for 6 months, I’ve got to agree.  Note to self: go to hardware store, find the right screws, seat 4 guests for dinner.  Step 2?  Recover the chair cushions.  I might have to go see Saul for that.

Oh and Frank is a Chicago man!  He tapes Design on a Dime here, has a gorgeous loft downtown and recently wrote a book called Dirty Little Secrets of Design. Ordered mine this morning.  Keep you posted on any divine inspiration beyond painting more walls and recovering these lame cushions.
