Citrus Coming Out of My Ears

You may remember that back in December, my dear Grandmother sent me some holiday cheer in the form of a box of oranges; 28 in all.  Ryan and I were so excited- produce in the winter up here is so yuck and having fresh, flavorful citrus was a huge treat.  We had an orange for breakfast, brought one with our lunches, cut one up for dessert at night.  We thoroughly enjoyed every last piece of that bright little Christmas gift.

Fast forward a month to the slip of paper that was under our apartment door last night notifying us that we had a perishable package to pick up downstairs.  Lo and behold…

We were sure to tell Grandma how much we loved our gift and apparently, she wanted to keep our Vitamin C levels up.  All. Winter. Long.  This box has not one but two layers of oranges- 44 of them, to be exact.

I’ve got to tell you, it’s been a stressful week in our household; lots of that technical life stuff going on.  So to get another box of so many damn oranges, well, Ryan and I had to put them down in the elevator because we were laughing so hard.  Laughing about what the heck we are going to do with 44 oranges and making up funny ways we can put them in everything we consume and even just the fact that my 93 year old Grandma who does not have internet access made another call to the orange people to request another grove be sent to Chicago.  We needed that laugh as much as our cold Chicago bodies need some Vitamin C.

And what do you know- the box says “From Sunny Florida” and it did actually send some light.  Sunny, indeed.

My darling 93 year old Grandmother lives in Florida.  And when I was young, it was tradition for her to send us “Up North” a big box of Florida oranges.  It hasn’t happened in the last few years so imagine my surprise when I went to pick up a package and it was this HUGE box of citrus!  Tangelos, red navels, navels and tangerines- 28 pieces of fruit in all!  Ryan and I weren’t very hungry last night and were having the hardest time deciding where to go to dinner.  In the end, we made a cocktail and sunk our teeth into our Floridian Christmas gift.

Merry, merry!
