Girl and the Goat

After 3 months of waiting (“You don’t have a table available for a Saturday night until July?!”), Ryan and I finally had dinner at Girl and the Goat.  I have never been so excited for a Thursday night at 9:30pm in my life.

To be clear: I think a several month wait to get a table at a restaurant is ridiculous.  But in the case of Stephanie Izard‘s much raved about Girl and the Goat, it was totally and absolutely worth it.

I was so enthralled with our bottle of wine and food that this picture was all I captured- a last sip of wine and some bread scraps.  Sorry I’m not sorry.

The loft-esque dining room coupled with Tom Petty tunes was a great first impression.  And the food?  Creative AND delicious.  Favorites included the ahi tuna with blueberries and lamb sausage, soft shell crab with green tomato and fig, bread with banana-peanut butter butter and a side of honeycomb…the perfect mix of flavors without trying too hard.  Our very favorite dish, however, was the green beans!  We ordered on the recommendation of a co-worker and holy wow.  I would eat green beans every single day if they were covered in fish sauce.  O.M.G(oat).

Ry and I had a blast- nothing like 3 months of anticipation to take date night up a notch!  I totally recommend it and please- for the love of goat, order the green beans.

Downtown Sound: Iron and Wine

Tonight: Downtown Sound’s New Music Mondays.

Kicking off the week with Iron and Wine sounds like a plan to me.  Grab a blanket, a bottle of wine, some snacks and head to Millennium Park- I promise you won’t regret an evening spent listening to free music with a sparkle-y city as a backdrop.

Millennium Park, ready to rock.

Me: “Why don’t we have a picture of us making out in rainboots?”

R: “Because we’ve never made out in rainboots.  Because I don’t even own rainboots.  And because people don’t take pictures of us making out.  Because that’s creepy.”

touché.

I do enjoy this picture though.

Trick of the Day

The entire walk home from getting takeout at the Goddess and the Grocer, I was craving a glass of white wine.  Something about walking past everyone sitting outside for dinner with their cocktails.  I didn’t have a bottle chilling in the fridge  but I remembered a little trick I learned from my step-mom, who always requests this alongside of her glass of white at restaurants (homegirl likes her pinot cold!).

The trick to instantly cold white wine?  Fill a martini shaker to the top with ice, pour in wine, shake, shake, shake it up and voila!  Ice cold white wine without a second in the fridge.

My step-mom is one smart cookie wine connoisseur.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…

I love living in a city where I can walk every single place I need to go.

Ryan was getting his hair cut in Lincoln Park tonight after work so I figured I’d meet him up there.  I could have cabbed it.  I could have taken a bus or the el.  But give me anything above 50 degrees and you know homegirl is going to throw on some tennies and make the 4.5 mile hike by foot.

On my way, I passed a little girl with mad love for frozen yogurt (“But Mom, I just really like frozen yogurt.  In fact, I love it.”), adolescent girls debating whether one of their father’s was gay, a wedding rehearsal in Newberry Park, a hipster dad holding the hand of a tot in a tutu and every single outdoor seat along Clark Street packed with happy hour happy people.  You just can’t beat nights like this.

This is absolutely my kind of town.
