I always have a hard time getting over holidays and National Donut Day last Friday is no exception. I think this calls for a stop at Firecakes tomorrow morning.

Please consider this my wholehearted endorsement of Da Lobsta. Whoa and oh em gee.

There are Hamburger Cakes at Mariano’s. Worth noting.

Warm weather and rooftops are a match made in (Chicago summer) heaven.

I tried Dream Dinners with a friend last week and not only was it a blast to prepare everything together, my freezer is filled with really great meals ready to go at a moments notice.

These just arrived in the mail today- I think they will be perfect for summer drinks and entertaining.

Seriously- what was that last night? The el ride up to Lincoln Park for a work event was a real treat, everyone all in mass panic “I need to get hooooome” mode, the Weather Channel blowing up my phone about the life threatening conditions that were developing, I got scared about how I was going to get home in a few hours when this derecho business was supposed to be at its worst. Around 10pm, I walked outside to find…rain. Which stopped by the time the cab pulled up in front of my building.

Cool story derecho, bro.

On Personal Responsibility

File this under “conversations with co-workers before 8am”.

Personal responsibility is great and muy essential but sometimes, you need to accept that it’s someone else’s job to teach you to operate the corkscrew.

Or something like that.

Thank God it’s Friday. And National Donut Day. Go get on that. I know I am.

Cats, wine and thumbs up,
Nina

I would love to have a drink with Fabio Viviani.

If this weather doesn’t shape up, it’s going to be a summer of inside picnics.

The mustache trend has driven me nuts- my Dad has rocked one for decades and he, like this puppy, know it’s not a trend- it’s a lifestyle.

We’re looking forward to the Old Town Art Fair this weekend- street festival season is on!

The only thing I might love more than snuggling is baby animals. This is both.

Years ago, happiness meant staying out til 3am and making questionable decisions; now, I am happy as a clam on Saturday night to cook a nice dinner and get a good night’s sleep so I can wake up early for a run or yoga- I agree that happiness changes as we get older.

Note to self: 1) get back to Paris ASAP and 2) practice being present with what’s now instead of planning what’s next.

My Work Space Essential

When I am not traveling, I work from home and I’ve found it’s essential to have my work space set up, ready to go each day. It shifts me into “I’m going to rock today” mode and with everything I need at my fingertips, I can focus on the task(s) at hand.

And one of the things I absolutely need is a juice. I make one every morning and I find chopping up fruits and veggies is a very calming and focusing part of my morning. Plus, I really like kicking off the day by putting lots of nutrients and vitamins in my body. I usually stick to apple/carrot/beet/ginger or green juice (kale/spinach/cucumber/apple/parsley or anything else the color green in my fridge). In looking to mix it up a bit, I wandered over to my friend Caroline’s blog– she is doing a “Smoothie and Juices Week” full of recipes, giveaways and tips. I am super excited to get ideas for new combos for my juicer- mix it up a bit, right?

Do you have a juice or smoothie recipe you love? Please share!

Have a happy and healthy Tuesday, friends!

The Shine Theory: Why Powerful Women Make the Best Friends

“When you meet a woman who is intimidatingly witty, stylish, beautiful, and professionally accomplished, befriend her. Surrounding yourself with the best people doesn’t make you look worse by comparison. It makes you better…

I want the strongest, happiest, smartest women in my corner, pushing me to negotiate for more money, telling me to drop men who make me feel bad about myself, and responding to my outfit selfies from a place of love and stylishness, not competition and body-snarking.”

— Ann Friedman, New York Magazine

There is no doubt about it, the women in my life 100% make me better- a better friend, a better partner, a better employee, a better peer, a better goal setter, achiever, more confident, more bold, you name it. And I cannot contain my excitement when I meet someone who inspires me with what badass things they are up to. I just don’t have time or energy for the alternative.

Shifting Perspective

There’s a lot to be said for guacamole, margaritas and girlfriend real talk to shift perspective. It’s funny- when I am in my shit, I always feel the need to do something different. This rooftop view, quite different than my porch view, was just what the doctor ordered and the impromptu girls happy hour was too.

I am going into this week with some serious gratitude for the people who know me well, for a sunny(ish) forecast and the city that never ceases to meet me exactly where I am.
