Holiday Cocktail Party
Ryan and I both love entertaining, love our friends and love Christmas so it was a no-brainer to have a cocktail party to ring in the Holidays!
After a few days of cookbook scouring, grocery trips (4 in all!) and apartment cleaning, we were ready to host 15+ of our friends. On the menu? Caprese Crostini, Bacon-Wrapped Scallops, Arancini balls, Maryland Crab Dip, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Turkey Meatballs in a Cranberry Sauce, Brie with Fig Jelly, Gingerbread and Oreo Balls. And Winter Sangria. And a Champagne Cocktail. And beer.
Despite our initial plan of keeping it simple (a house drink, beer, and some appetizers), our menu grew and grew until we had 2 house cocktails and 10 different dishes. We got carried away but we enjoy preparing both our home and our kitchen so much that I think it was as much a gift for us as it was for our guests, a fun little project to take on together. After all, ’tis the season, right?
Here’s a pic I snapped right before the party wrapped up.
Bittersweet by Shauna Niequist: A Review
She made my “Favorite Things” list, I’ve blogged quotes from her books and gushed over how excited I was when Bittersweet arrived in the mail and now here it is- Just A Chi Town Girl’s official review and giveaway of Bittersweet!
Bittersweet is author Shauna Niequist’s second book and truly the best book I’ve read in the last year. Here’s what I think: anyone can write a book with their knowledge, sharing what they’ve experienced. The difference about Shauna and Bittersweet is that she not only shares her experiences both gracefully and with humility but she also gives helpful tips that are actionable. The difference about Shauna and Bittersweet is the “Me Too!” factor: her writing transcends the specific experience she’s sharing; it’s relatable even if you haven’t exactly been where she’s been. The difference? A book that is as appetizing as the cover and filled me up far after I had finished the last page.
“Bittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace and Learning the Hard Way” chronicles recent history in Shauna’s life that had challenging and often painful seasons, the kind that hurt like hell when you’re in them but you live through anyways because, well, you have to. And when you emerge on the other side, you have grown and changed in ways you maybe never wanted to but, with the grace of God, have strengthened you in ways you could not imagine.
Bittersweet introduced me to the “home team”, a concept that has literally changed my behavior.
“Everybody has a home team: it’s the people you call when you get a flat tire or when something terrible happens….These are the ones who tell you their secrets, who get themselves a glass of water without asking when they’re at your house. These are the people who cry when you cry. These are your people, your middle-of-the-night, no-matter-what people.”
My “home team” is comprised of people I love deeply and fiercely; people who have stood by my side through anything and everything. And when it really comes down to it, these are the people I need to be putting my resources into, my time, effort and money. That’s not to say that I don’t have people in my life who are very important and whom I love…it’s that when push comes to shove, my “home team” sustains me and it’s those relationships that I have to make sure are right and invest in. When making decisions, I really rely on this “home team” concept and I feel now, more than ever, deeply satisfied with my decisions.
Bittersweet also makes things okay. Far too often, we frantically try to paint over the ugly in life because, well, it’s hard to deal with or a “right” answer can’t be found. Bittersweet puts it out there: sometimes, bad things happen to good people, sometimes, life doesn’t turn out the way you penned it to paper in your master plan. And sometimes, that can really suck. But Bittersweet reminds us and makes it okay to just sit still with those imperfect parts- let it be ugly and go from there. I had a painful, super ugly relationship end several years ago. Part of what made that so difficult to move past was that I didn’t have an answer. I didn’t have anything that fixed it or prettied it, validated it or made it anything other than what it was: something bad I needed to get away from as fast as I could. Blame it on my youth but gosh, I wish it had occurred to me that it was perfectly fine to sit with the pain, sit with the suckiness of it all and just live my way into my future, into something better. Not everything can be “fixed” and that’s okay. As bad as something may hurt, you’re going to rely on the “home team”, make it through the day and grow anyways.
The bottom line? Change, grace and learning the hard way is a beautiful, if not challenging, part of life and Bittersweet gives a beautiful, relatable, humble voice to that. At the end of every chapter, I cheered, I laughed or I teared up, at the very least. But most of all, I said “thank you”. Thank you, Shauna for writing about things that matter, about things that are hard to say and for giving an unwavering reminder that through it all, we have our “home teams” and serve a God that is full of grace.

My First Giveaway!
TOMORROW is Just a Chi Town Girl’s 1st giveaway! I am so excited, it’s one of my very favorite things. Read, comment, win. Boom.
High Five Thursday
As winter takes its firm hold on Chicago and I put on at least 3 layers every time I step foot outside, I forget that Luna Bell doesn’t have that option and, while she does not go outside, she gets cold too!
Exhibit A: My little peanut snuggled under an inside-out sweatshirt that I pulled over her when she was looking cold and trying to burrow into the bedspread.
So, high-five to LB and her efforts to stay warm… you do the same when you head out for the day!
From Our Town To Yours
Our Christmas cards came in the mail today! I found these darling cards on Etsy and could not be happier with my choice. I love the skyline, I love the red Chicago flag stars, I love the nod to Frank Sinatra (“My Kind of Town“, get it?!)…love, love, love.
A huge thank you to the artist, The Letter Betty! Her graphics and designs are creative, cheeky and gorgeous- check her out on Etsy!
New Boot Monday
Today is a “I-can’t-wait-to-go-outside-because-I-have-new-boots!” kind of day!
The truth of the matter is, I live in Chicago and it sure isn’t getting any warmer here for the next 3-6 months. With my Uggs from college having officially bit the dust, it was time to find something new to keep my tootsies warm (and dry!) in the frigid months to come.
After polling some girlfriends and co-workers, Boss Lady Julie gave the most glowing recommendation about Sorel’s. Since Julie usually has the answers to all of my questions, I figured she couldn’t be wrong about boots and, sure enough, the second I slipped on a pair at Nordstom, I was in love (well, as in love as you can be with a pair of winter boots).
There’s usually not much to love about utility (believe me, I wish these were a pair of 4-inch heels) but the little touch of fur makes me feel the slightest bit cute and girly.
I’m going to go kick the crap out of these in the slush, wind, snow and city streets now.
Cookies, Wine, Love, and Girlfriends
Last night was one of those “I don’t want to be anywhere else or with anyone else in the world right now” kind of nights.
I’ve been feeling lately like my female friendships are the things that go by the wayside when work/life gets hectic and busy, which is way super lame, I know. But last night, we made being together a priority and I can truly say that I haven’t felt that whole, that content in quite a while.
Tofu lasagna, 6 bottles of wine, 6 different kinds of cookies and the girls that definitely make up a part of my “home team”…I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday night.
Cooking Lesson Learned: melt chocolate in the microwave. Doing it on the store without a double boiler makes for chocolate that closely resembles hummus. Super gross and inedible.
Life Lesson Learned: girlfriends are one of the best gifts in the world, not only just at Christmas. Get together, drink wine, and bake more often.

Chocolate Covered Pretzels, Peanut Butter cookies w/ Kisses, Chocolate Covered Oreo Balls, Wreaths, Almond Balls, and Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies
On Baking: Cookie Exchange Edition
Tomorrow, a group of girlfriends will convene at my friend Amanda’s darling Lincoln Park apartment for a cookie baking party and exchange. From my understanding, her grandmother does this with the family every year and now Amanda is bringing the tradition Chicago-side. We’ve been instructed to bring the ingredients for our favorite cookie to so we can spend the evening baking together and then trade up at the end so we each go home with a taste of everything. We were also told to bring wine. I don’t think that has anything to do with cookies.
After much (internal) debate, I have decided to make Chocolate-Covered Oreo Balls. A co-worker’s Mom made them for a work event once and for as decadent as they tasted, I was so surprised to learn how simple they were to make. With any luck, my contribution to the cookie exchange will look like this:
Oreo Ball Recipe Ingredients
- 8 ounces softened cream cheese or whipped cream cheese
- 18 ounces package of Oreo cookies, crushed (crush the entire cookie- don’t remove the filling!)
- 2 cups semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon shortening
Oreo Balls Recipe Instructions
Mix cream cheese with electric mixer until fluffy. Add the crushed Oreos and beat on high until well mixed. Chill for at least 2 hours in the freezer. Then roll Oreo cookie mix into one inch Oreo Balls.
Next, melt the chocolate chips and shortening with a double boiler or in the microwave.
Dip the Oreo balls completely into the melted chocolate using tongs or a toothpick.
Put on wax paper. After the Oreo balls harden, keep them in the refrigerator.
Makes about 3 or 4 dozen Oreo Balls, depending on the size.
What about you? I’d love to hear what your favorite holiday recipes are!
