She made my “Favorite Things” list, I’ve blogged quotes from her books and gushed over how excited I was when Bittersweet arrived in the mail and now here it is- Just A Chi Town Girl’s official review and giveaway of Bittersweet!

Bittersweet is author Shauna Niequist’s second book and truly the best book I’ve read in the last year.  Here’s what I think: anyone can write a book with their knowledge, sharing what they’ve experienced.  The difference about Shauna and Bittersweet is that she not only shares her experiences both gracefully and with humility but she also gives helpful tips that are actionable.  The difference about Shauna and Bittersweet is the “Me Too!” factor: her writing transcends the specific experience she’s sharing; it’s relatable even if you haven’t exactly been where she’s been.  The difference?  A book that is as appetizing as the cover and filled me up far after I had finished the last page.

“Bittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace and Learning the Hard Way” chronicles recent history in Shauna’s life that had challenging and often painful seasons, the kind that hurt like hell when you’re in them but you live through anyways because, well, you have to.  And when you emerge on the other side, you have grown and changed in ways you maybe never wanted to but, with the grace of God, have strengthened you in ways you could not imagine.

Bittersweet introduced me to the “home team”, a concept that has literally changed my behavior.

“Everybody has a home team: it’s the people you call when you get a flat tire or when something terrible happens….These are the ones who tell you their secrets, who get themselves a glass of water without asking when they’re at your house.  These are the people who cry when you cry.  These are your people, your middle-of-the-night, no-matter-what people.”

My “home team” is comprised of people I love deeply and fiercely; people who have stood by my side through anything and everything.  And when it really comes down to it, these are the people I need to be putting my resources into, my time, effort and money.  That’s not to say that I don’t have people in my life who are very important and whom I love…it’s that when push comes to shove, my “home team” sustains me and it’s those relationships that I have to make sure are right and invest in.  When making decisions, I really rely on this “home team” concept and I feel now, more than ever, deeply satisfied with my decisions.

Bittersweet also makes things okay.  Far too often, we frantically try to paint over the ugly in life because, well, it’s hard to deal with or a “right” answer can’t be foundBittersweet puts it out there: sometimes, bad things happen to good people, sometimes, life doesn’t turn out the way you penned it to paper in your master plan.  And sometimes, that can really suck.  But Bittersweet reminds us and makes it okay to just sit still with those imperfect parts- let it be ugly and go from there.  I had a painful, super ugly relationship end several years ago.  Part of what made that so difficult to move past was that I didn’t have an answer.  I didn’t have anything that fixed it or prettied it, validated it or made it anything other than what it was: something bad I needed to get away from as fast as I could.  Blame it on my youth but gosh, I wish it had occurred to me that it was perfectly fine to sit with the pain, sit with the suckiness of it all and just live my way into my future, into something better.  Not everything can be “fixed” and that’s okay.  As bad as something may hurt, you’re going to rely on the “home team”, make it through the day and grow anyways.

The bottom line?  Change, grace and learning the hard way is a beautiful, if not challenging, part of life and Bittersweet gives a beautiful, relatable, humble voice to that.  At the end of every chapter, I cheered, I laughed or I teared up, at the very least.  But most of all, I said “thank you”.  Thank you, Shauna for writing about things that matter, about things that are hard to say and for giving an unwavering reminder that through it all, we have our “home teams” and serve a God that is full of grace.

Just A Chi Town Girl’s Favorite Things

adminCold Tangerines, favorite things, Garrett's popcorn, Goose Island, k. amato, Kiehl's Coconut Lip Balm, love lettuce, Love Lettuce. Just a Chi Town Girl, Lush, Oprah's Favorite Things, Shauna Niequist, Sofie, Uncategorized%s Comment

If it’s good enough for Oprah, it’s good enough for me.

This morning, the Queen of Chicago announced her “2010 Ultimate Favorite Things”, her biggest show of the year which gifts her entire studio audience with everything The Big O deems amazing.

While I won’t be dishing out these goodies (O and I do NOT share the same bank account), in the spirit of Chicago Women divulging their favorite things, I wanted to give you Just a Chi Town Girl’s 2010 Favorite Things.  Some are Chicago-centric, some are just fabulous but all are things I love.  And hope you will too.

Have Joy.

1. Lush’s Love Lettuce Mask

A nice little pick-me-up, mini-spa-at-home treat.  It smells like lavendar, uses crushed almonds to exfoliate and has seaweed in it to get your skin nice, clean and green.  Oh and if you return 5 empty pots to Lush, you get a mask for free.  Positively Lush-ious.

2. Kiehl’s Coconut Lip Balm #1

A little shine, a lotta moisture and the coconut adds a taste of summer year round.  Perfect stocking stuffer (hint, hint, Mom.)

3.  K. Amato Jewelry

I first found K. Amato when I lived in Lincoln Park- she has a little storefront that is by-appointment only but my roommate and I attended her 3x a year open houses religiously.  The Wabash necklace was my Christmas gift from Ryan last year (in a gorgeous smokey quartz), a statement piece I love!  Her designs are sophisticated, unique and affordable.  Plus, Kristen is a Chicago girl- gotta show her the Chicago love!

4.  Aspen Bay’s Capri Blue Candle– #6

I fell in love with this candle years ago at Anthropologie.  The flame looks beautiful through the blue glass and the smell is just to-die-for.  I change candles seasonally in my kitchen but this is my standard, spa smell that I just can’t live without.

5.  lululemon athletica Groove Pants

Oprah and I share one thing: our love of lululemon and our belief that their pants make your rear end look new and improved.  My favorite are the Groove Pants; wearing them as I type, in fact!

6.  More Cupcakes

More Cupcakes are the best cupcakes in Chicago.  Hands down.  Visit their Delaware Street boutique on any given Saturday and the line is out the door.  Perfect ratio of cake to frosting is hard to find but More has nailed it.  Try the Black and White- it’s my favorite!

6.  Goose Island’s Sofie

I am a diehard 312 fan (I live in Chicago, how can I not be?) but Goose Island has a new kid on the block: Sofie.  Sofie is a tart, dry sparkling ale that has the citrus taste we know and love from 312 but there’s a smooth, vanilla aftertaste business to Sofie.  Reminds me a bit of champagne, a bit of beer…aka, the perfect holiday drink!

7.  Garrett’s Popcorn

If you have ever been walking down Michigan Avenue and smelled Garrett’s Popcorn wafting it’s way toward you from down the block, you know what I’m talking about.  There’s really no way you can’t give in the that smell.  The cheese-caramel popcorn mix.  Enough said.

8.  Burberry Cashmere Scarf

Burberry is definitely not a Chicago brand but sometimes, you just have to go across the pond for some luxe.  I know this is not an original add to my Favorite Things List but this scarf is snuggled against my neck from November to March.  There’s something about Burberry to me that just signals the holidays.  Maybe it’s the classic plaid.

9. Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist

A beautifully woven collection of essays, author Shauna Niequist‘s first book had me at “celebrate”.  Cold Tangerines explores the idea of celebrating (gasp!) the everyday, ordinary parts of our lives because guest what?  The things we constantly overlook are exactly the things that are take-your-breath-away amazing.  Shauna is a Chicago author and person that I just adore– I look forward to her books just like I do a great meal.  And I devour them immediately.

I know I didn’t send anyone on a cruise but I do have a giveaway, my VERY FIRST giveaway, coming up next week.  Stay tuned and get excited- it IS definitely one of my favorite things!

Big Moments

“I don’t want to wait anymore. I choose to believe that there is nothing more sacred or profound than this day.  I choose to believe that there may be a thousand big moments embedded in this day, waiting to be discovered like tiny shards of gold.  The big moments are the daily, tiny moments of courage and forgiveness and hope that we grab on to and extend to one another.  That’s the drama of life, swirling all around us, and generally I don’t even see if, because I’m too busy waiting to become whatever it is I think I am about to become.  The big moments are in every hour, every conversation, every meal, every meeting.” from Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist

Bittersweet

“When life is sweet, say thank you and celebrate.  When life is bitter, say thank you and grow.” Bittersweet

Chicago author Shauna Niequist is releasing her second book in August and I’m eagerly anticipating it’s arrival at my door–the first book I’ve ever pre-ordered.  Titled “Bittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace and Learning the Hard Way”, it comes out in August and I can’t wait.  I had the pleasure of meeting Shauna through participating in a book club for her first book “Cold Tangerines” –a book filled with tons of delicious “me too!” moments–and I’ve followed her writing ever since.  It just makes you feel warm and inspired and heard, even though it’s her words you are reading.  It’s one of my favorite books, the kiind you keep going back to and reading a chapter when you need some sustenance or inspiration.  I highly recommend it.

The above quote from Bittersweet really struck me.  The good stuff–promotions, babies, engagements, good news, holidays–is easy to celebrate because you know that’s what you’re supposed to do.  It feels good and you act accordingly (preferably with champagne and chocolate).  But the bitter, the bitter is always so much more difficult and, at least with me, I always struggle with knowing what to do.  And I rarely feel grateful for it.  But what if I went into it like that quote from Bittersweet–going into everything with gratitude and then action.  Amazing day?  Thanks, let’s get tapas!   Scary and bumpy cab ride home with a guy who smells and listens to bad music?  Thanks, I’ll take the train next time.  Gratefulness, learning, AND growth.  What a concept.

High Five of the Day:  The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook. I ate my cereal this morning while delving into it and bought the ingredients for Lobster Pot Pie to make tomorrow.  Stay tuned.
