The End of an Era

The Queen of Chicago made it official this morning- The Oprah Winfrey Show is over.  I’ve got to admit, I had a few teary eyed moments during the finale.  I’ve grown up watching Oprah.  So many conversations between my mom and I were sparked by her daily topics; anticipating her “Favorite Things” was popcorn-making worthy.  Say what you want about her politics but the spotlight Oprah has put on the importance, the necessity of education has changed lives and our country.

Self worth, education, personal responsibility, empowerment, and a lot of hugging- I’m down with anytime television programming is centered on any of those.  Thanks, O for bringing it strong into our living rooms for the past 25 years.  My 9am time slot (and DVR) is going to be a little empty without you.

(Almost) Ready to Run

5 days until the Soldier Field 10 Miler.

I signed up for this race in January and am blown away at how quickly it has crept up on me.  If we’re being honest, I haven’t exactly been running 10 miles lately.  More like…less, less than 10.  Thank goodness for the adrenaline of race day…pounding the pavement with thousands of other runners who have the same goal- making it to that finish line.  Which in this race is the freaking 50 yard line of Soldier Field!  Which is all sorts of awesome and will totally get me through those 10 miles.

If that isn’t enough motivation, Ryan and I have a Cubs game to get to at noon!  Soldier Field and Wrigley Field in one day?  Jazz hands, all around!

On Rose Water and Kindness

Last week, I had one of those days that made me want to pull my hair out.  It was all I could do to not write a post titled “Here’s What/Who I think Are Morons and Here’s Why” (instead, you were treated to more ramblings about vegetables.  The moron post would have been funnier but less, um, appropriate).

Enter my friend Kate and rose water.

You see, Kate is growing a baby right now so I occasionally send her blog posts about baby growing that I think she might like.  It’s no secret that Emphasis Added is one of my favorite blogs and since its author recently had a baby, I knew Kate would love it as much as I do.

I was right.

Before she even heard about my day that spurred a thousand eye rolls, Kate had read a post on Emphasis Added about rose water and gone to Merz Apothecary in the Palmer House to pick up some of what Emphasis Added deemed her “can’t-live-without beauty product”.  And she gifted me with a bottle as well!

This was absolutely the best thing that happened to me on Friday.  It made me feel so taken care of on two levels.  1) Spritzing a little rose water on my face before I apply my moisturizer or on my pillow at night is the most delightful indulgence and 2) it was such a lovely act of kindness that what was irking me didn’t matter so much anymore- kindness trumps suckiness any day of the week.

To wrap it up: Heritage Rose Water.  In a blue glass spray bottle (because the Heritage bottle IS kinda busted).  Spritz everywhere.  The End.

Plant Strong: Day 10

adminUncategorized%s Comments

I’ve been on Whole Foods Market’s Plant Strong Challenge for 10 days now.

Which means that for 10 days, I’ve jumped head first (mouth first?) into a plant based diet, eschewing meat, dairy, sugary desserts, and processed and packaged food.

And ya know, it’s going well.

I was a vegetarian for 3 years so I wasn’t at a loss for what I would eat on a plant-based diet.  Being Plant Strong has been more about pausing and actually thinking about what I put in my body as opposed to the mindless eating that I had fallen into- you know, stumbling into my kitchen after work and grabbing the first thing I see to throw in the microwave.  Or ordering a banana muffin with my morning coffee just because they look so yummy all lined up in a row in the display case at King Cafe.  Like little banana muffin soldiers.

In attempts to fuel my body with as much fresh goodness as possible, I’ve been drinking a lot of smoothies and juices.

The ol’ Cuisinart has been getting it’s blender workout at home and it turns out that Jamba Juice has legit fruit and veggie smoothies that are actually really good and not super high in calories.  Forty Carrots at Bloomingdale’s also juiced 2 carrots, 2 beets and 2 apples for me and it was so lovely to not have to actually eat 2 carrots, 2 beets and 2 apples in order to get those nutrients.  Thanks, guys.

And spinach. I cannot get enough spinach.  I craaave it.

So for now, all systems are a go- I am feeling fantastic, lots of energy and it’s really nice to be reconnected to the concept that food really IS fuel…and pumping my body full of premium.

Caramel Cupcakes Inspired by The Help

adminUncategorized%s Comments

Last night, I posted about my fav recent read “The Help”.  This morning, I had a comment from Former College Co-Worker Cindy with a link to a recipe for Caramel Cupcakes.

You see, one of the main characters in the book is a maid named Minny whose claim to fame (in addition to her sassy mouth) is her caramel cake.

“Minny near bout the best cook in Hinds County, maybe even all a Mississippi.  The Junior League Benefit come around ever fall and they be wanting her to make ten caramel cakes to auction off.  She ought a be the most sought-after help in the state.”

Just reading about the cake made my mouth water so thank goodness the lovely blogger over at “The Cupcake Project” created a cupcake recipe based on the cake from the book!

Click here for the recipe- I can’t wait to make it!

Thanks so much, Cindy- I miss you too!

Book Love: The Help

Absolutely the best book I have read in a very, very long time.

Set against the Civil Rights Movement in Jackson, Mississippi, The Help follows the relationship between Skeeter, a budding writer/social activist, and the black women who raise her friends’ children but aren’t trusted to polish silver or even use the same restrooms.  Skeeter begins collecting the stories of these women about their experiences being “the help” and the result is a shocking and brutally honest book that gives hope to the black community and a reality check to the country clubbers who scorn them.

It’s amazing the things we are willing to tell ourselves in order to preserve ideas that we are convinced are right.  This was one of those books that I was thinking about even when I wasn’t reading it and couldn’t wait to get home to finish.  Amazing character development and so full of heart and history.

Do-Gooder Alert: Gap and Goodwill

The two biggest retailers-that-start-with-the-letter-“g” have joined forces to help the clothesless! You don’t know what i’m talking about, do you? Let me explain: from now until may 29th (11 more days!), if you bring your old clothes to any local Gap, the store will donate them to Goodwill. In exchange, you’ll receive 30% off your total purchase

What a coincidence- I have a bag of clothes ready to go AND need to get my hands on some white denim.  Great idea, great cause.

Summer Jewelry Love

A little lunchtime jewelry shopping with a girlfriend made me wonder what one of my fav designers has been up to lately (wearing her Leigh Anne necklace as we speak type, in fact!).

It turns out, Jaclyn Anthony Designs has been up to this: the Miller and Elaine necklaces.  Mad love for this layered look.  Will most likely be treating myself to this the next time something special happens.

Does brushing Luna Bell count as special?
